Whiplash Injury Treatment
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury that occurs when you head suddenly moves backward and forward, similar to the motion of someone cracking a whip. These motions stretch your body beyond it's normal range of motion, which causes injury to the surrounding ligaments, tendons, and muscles, and results in pain. Whiplash can happen during a car accident (the most common cause), sporting activities (especially contact sports), and even accidental falls.
Symptoms of Whiplash:
-
- Neck pain and/or stiffness
- Headaches
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness or light-headedness (Vertigo)
- Nausea
- Fatigue or weakness
- Ringing in the ears (Tinnitus)
- Shoulder pain
- Lower back pain and/or stiffness
- Numbness or tingling (pins and needles feeling)
- Jaw and/or face pain
Factors that can Make Whiplash Worse:
-
- Pre-existing factors, like arthritis
- Age, since older people tend to have less flexible muscles and ligaments
- Incorrect headrest (head restraint) position, having the head restraint positioned too low can increase damage to the neck. It should be positioned where the top of the headrest is even with the top of your head.
- Women and children are more likely to suffer whiplash injuries
- Rear-end collisions tend to cause more intense whiplash injuries
- If your head was turned at the time of impact, this can cause more intense damage
